History
The Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps (Carmel VAC) was established in 1968. In the first year of operation, service was provided from 6 pm to 6 am during week days and 24 hour service on weekends and holidays. During the day time hours, Monday to Friday, service wasprovided by surrounding towns.
The first ambulance was a used Cadillac ambulance purchased from Rosedale, Queens. Because of its age a second Cadillac ambulance was purchased. Around 1970, the ambulance moved to new quarters located at 85 Gleneida Avenue. This would be the home of the ambulance corps for the next 20 years.
In 1992, a parcel of land was purchased behind the Carmel Fire Department located at 6 Garrett. Place. At the end of the year a new building was completed. The Carmel VAC is one of only four ambulances in Putnam County that are not affiliated with their local fire department. In 1993, a tax district was established to finance the operation ofthe ambulance.
In 2010, an addition was completed and dedicated in memory of John Guido, a former Captain and Life Member of the ambulance corps.
In the first year of service, the ambulance responded to 82 calls and in 2015, it received 1,380 calls. Throughout the years, there have been approximately 600 members from all walks of life willing to volunteer their time to help others. The Ambulance Corps has given demonstrations at the Drew Nursery School and Carmel Nursery School; provided "standbys" at the 4H Fair and the Explorers' Weekend at Putnam Veterans Memorial Park. We also participate with the local fire departments during Fire Prevention Week in October.
